In regards to Peru, there are only a few choices for US investors. On the NYSE there is BVN–a mining company, PCU another mining company, and BAP a bank. Those might be the only ones on the NYSE. On the OTC there are a couple–CEMTY a cement company, CATJY another mining company, FERXY an engineering company, and GRYMY a construction company. Of those BVN is the one that most folks would gravitate toward.
As for Brazil, there are a great deal more choices for you to select from. The one that a lot of people are buying these days is PBR, the Brazilian oil company that is rumored to be sitting on vast oil reserves. Another that has recently caught people’s attention is ABV, sort of Brazil’s answer to Coke and Bud all rolled into one. There are a lot more choices for Brazil too.
There are quite a few mutual funds that will allow you to invest in the BRIC countries in one fashion or another. I own a couple that invest in China and India. CHN, CAF, TDF, IIF, and MCHFX. I also own PRLAX that invests in Latin America. 68% of its holdings are in Brazil. 2% Peru.
